OEM and ODM in Taiwan — what should a buyer know?

OEMmanufacturing usually means the manufacturer produces according to the customer’s specification or design. ODMmeans the manufacturer contributes more of its own product or design capability, which the customer can use and customize for its own brand.

Clarify what is actually being offered

The same manufacturer may use the terms OEM and ODM differently. Ask specifically which parts of the product are already developed, what can be changed, who owns the tooling, drawings and modifications, and what minimum order quantities apply to each option.

A sample is not yet production

A good prototype or sample is an important step, but serial production also depends on repeatable quality, acceptance criteria, packaging, documentation and change management.

Ask before you negotiate too far on price

MOQ, tooling, product-development fees, certifications, lead time and delivery terms should be clarified as early as possible. This helps avoid a supplier that looks attractive on price but does not fit the practical requirements.
