DIGITAL COMMERCE

Digital commerce in Taiwan — what should you assess first?

Simply translating a website does not mean digital sales will work in a new market.

When a company evaluates Taiwan as a market, digital channels are often one of the fastest ways to form an initial practical view of the competitive landscape and customers’ alternatives. Before investing, it is worth checking how relevant competitors appear online, where products are sold and what localization your own customer journey would require.

1. Start with competitors and channels

Identify who offers comparable products or services, what their websites and online stores look like, and which other digital sales channels they use. The goal is not to copy competitors, but to understand customers’ current options and the market’s expected standard.

2. Check what actually needs localization

Language is only one part of localization. Product presentation, pricing, delivery terms, payments, contact methods, customer service, trust-building content and technical integrations can all affect how credible the service feels to a local customer.

3. Decide whether to build new or adapt what you already have

A new website or online store should not be the automatic answer. A more sensible first step is often to assess the current technical foundation and determine whether the market can be tested with limited localized content, a landing page, a distribution partner or a localized version of the existing store.

4. Combine the digital view with commercial research

Digital analysis is most useful when considered together with the market, partners and practical distribution. If competitors sell mainly through local retailers, for example, launching only your own online store may not be the best first move.

5. Run a small test first

Before a broader market entry, a focused assessment can cover competitors, digital channels, content requirements, potential partners and technical implementation options. The next investment decision can then be based on more concrete information.
